R is for Rachel (R114H)

  1. Print lower case "r" in Time New Roman font size 650 on dark purple paper (save the page as you'll need the "r" later)
  2. Cut out letter with an exacto knife
  3. Stitch around letter with mini-sewing machine
  4. Trim piece to 4 1/2" x 5 1/2" and set aside
  5. Fold an 8 1/2 x 11" piece of lilac cardstock to make a 8 1/2 x 5 1/2" card
  6. Ink the edges with purple
  7. Tear decorative paper to fit the front, leaving a little border, and attach with double-sided tape
  8. Using a thin strip of tape or other glue, attach dark purple "r" to card along both sides and the bottom, leaving the top open for the tag
    Prepare the tag:
  9. In your graphics or word processing program, draw a 3 3/4" x 5 7/8" rectangle around the "r." I changed the color of the "r" to a very light grey
  10. Type the words you want to appear in the opening in dark purple Angelina font (I used Rachel, loving, kind, sweet, beautiful). Arrange them on the "r" in appropriate places
  11. Type various quotes or other text using a lighter purple and smaller font, and fit these in between the other words you typed
  12. Print on scrap paper, cut and insert into "r" pocket on card to see if you need to make any adjustments
  13. When all is lined up, print on lilac cardstock, cut into a tag, and sponge the edges with purple ink
  14. Cut a small square of dark purple and attach to the top and punch a hole through
  15. Thread various fibers through hole
  16. Insert tag in "r" pocket - the light grey "r" on the tag helps to line it up in the opening.
  17. Glue a small silver heart clip to the pocket

Birthday Definition (R118Q)

  1. Cut a 3 1/2" x 5 1/4" tag from cream cardstock and set aside
  2. Fold an 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" piece of cream cardstock in half, and cut 1 3/4" down the folded edge
  3. Fold down the front piece to make a flap, and trim to 1 1/2"
  4. Cover the inside right side of the card and the flap with striped paper. (You don't need to cover the entire inside since only about 2" will be showing - and I hate to waste!)
  5. I used pink digital paper and I placed a flower dingbat font* in black ink on the paper on my computer screen before I printed it. You can either print the font on purchased scrapbook paper, or stamp any design you wish. (I also printed enough pink paper to cover the tag.)
  6. Attach the pink paper to the front of the card, making sure the top edge is covered by the flap
  7. Stick the flap down with double sided tape, and sew along the right, bottom and left edges of the card, making a pocket
  8. Print "Happy Birthday" on 2" x 1 1/4" cream cardstock and ink the edges with olive ink
  9. Press a pink brad into each side of the piece, and catch pink and green ribbon under the brad
  10. Attach to the flap with foam tape
  11. Ink the edges of the entire pocket with olive ink
  12. Cover the tag with the pink paper
  13. Add a small square of solid olive cardstock to the top and punch a hole
  14. Add a pink leaf and eyelet
  15. Tie olive striped ribbon through the hole
  16. Ink the edges of the tag
  17. Print the Birthday definition on vellum, cut out and ink the edges with olive
  18. Attach to the tag with vellum tape.

*The largest size I could get to print of this font was 136 pt. When I tried anything larger, the printer acted like it was going to print, but the paper never went through. I didn't get an error message - it just didn't print. I'm sure every printer is different, depending on memory, etc., so if it doesn't print at first, reduce the size of the font.

    Fonts: Birthday definition - G F Halda
Happy Birthday - CAC Shishoni Brush
Floral Garnish dingbat font - letter j, size 136 (Darrian's Dingbat Fonts)

Stamps: None - Pink Digital Paper - original was purple, I recolored to pink (Laurie Farrar, Shabbyesque Design); Striped Digital Paper - I recolored some of the stripes to match my card (Kay Eflin, E-scape and Scrap)
