This project is for a travel-themed wedding shower. A blank recipe card was sent with every invitation, asking that the guest write their favorite recipe and bring it to the shower. Cards were collected and put into the recipe box which was given to the bride-to-be.

Recipe Box

This is a very simple project, but a little time consuming. I purchased an unfinished wooden recipe box, designed to hold 3" x 5" cards.

  1. Paint two coats of acrylic paint inside box, inside lid, and inside edges with color to match your paper (these parts will show in your finished piece)

  2. I used the box as a template to cut out pieces from scrapbook paper. I cut the side pieces a little wider than the box so they could overlap onto the front and back. This way, when I attached my front piece, there were no gaps of unpainted box showing through. I also cut the pieces for the lid a little higher than necessary so they would overlap onto the top. You will need:

    • front box
    • front lid
    • back box
    • back lid
    • left and right sides box
    • left and right sides lid
    • top
    • Inside lid (optional)

  3. Paint a coat of Mod Podge onto one of the side surfaces and attach the paper, wrapping around the edges.

  4. Once the paper is secure, attach other side, then front and back. (I couldn't remove the hardware, so I carefully cut my paper to accommodate)

  5. Paint a thin, even coat of Mod Podge, completely covering all the paper

Note: I noticed a lot of bubbles and warped paper after I coated the outside with the Mod Podge. Before it dries, press lightly on all the bubbles and smooth them out. They did dry flat.

  6. Repeat with the outer lid, and top
  7. Paint a second coat of Mod Podge on the entire outside of box
  8. Paint inside lid with Mod Podge and attach a piece of scrapbook paper
  9. Coat entire inside with Mod Podge, including edges
  10. Paint a coat of Mod Podge on bottom of box
  11. I attached purchased stickers to the front and sides, and painted with a thin coat of Mod Podge.

I created the piece for the top digitally by scanning the scrapbook paper to use as a background. I opened an image 5" x 3" and added the background. The wine label collage was clip-art and was brightly colored. I changed the hue and saturation to a color that would go with the background paper and added the labels as a layer. I then printed the top, trimmed, and attached to the box.

Recipe Card

  1. Create an image 5" x 3" at 300 dpi and fill with the postcard collage background
  2. Add a layer, select a rectangle, and fill with cream color
  3. Lower the opacity on the rectangle layer til you can see the background image, but still would be able to add text
  4. Save this image to use as the card divider, and duplicate the image to continue with the recipe card.
  5. Add a layer, and add the text (Recipe Name, Category, Made for...)and lines
  6. Save image as Recipe Card Front
  7. Duplicate the image, save as Recipe Card Back
  8. Delete the text that you added, and insert additional lines
I was able to print 5 cards on one sheet of 8 1/2 x 11" cardstock, by lining up 3 cards horizontally down the left side, and rotating two cards and adding them to the right side. Once you have the cards lined up, duplicate the layout and line up the backs of the cards in the exact same position. Print the front of the cards, and then turn your paper, put it back through the printer, and print the backs

Now comes the tricky part - I had to do many test runs to get the backs to print in the correct spot. I'm sure it's a geometry thing that I can't quite grasp, but you can't just print the fronts and turn the paper and print the backs. You need to move the image of the backs on your screen to get it to print in the correct place. If anyone has the "key" to doing this, I'd love to know it!

Dividers

  1. Open the image you saved in #4 above.
  2. Add a layer, draw a rectangle with rounded edges to cover almost a third of the width of the card, and fill with the background paper
  3. Duplicate the image twice
  4. One one image, move the tab to the center of the card, and on the other image, move the tab to the right
  5. Add the text to the tabs of the dividers and print on cardstock
Most dividers would have headings like Appetizers, Desserts, Meats, etc., but since this was for a travel-themed shower, we used regional types of foods like Italian, Chinese, American, German, etc.

Travel-Themed Invitation

I set up the invitations so I could print two on an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of cardstock, then put the cardstock back through the printer to print the inside text. It took me several test runs until the front and back were lined up properly.

    Tags:
  1. Open the luggage tag clip art and add the text (Yvonne's Travel Shower)
  2. Duplicate the image and line up 8 on an 8 1/2" x 11" page
  3. Print onto white cardstock
  4. Outline the buckle with silver paint
  5. When dry, cut out and attach to card with foam tape for dimension

    Invitation:
  1. Create a 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" rectangle and fill with the travel collage image
  2. Add text at top and bottom
  3. Open a blank 8 1/2" x 11" page and line up the invitation at the bottom right of the page
  4. Duplicate the image and add to the bottom left of page
  5. I added my logo so it would print on the back of the invitation - you can see that I needed to put it upside down onto the page so it would print correctly when the page was folded.
  6. On a second blank 8 1/2" x 11" page, add your text
  7. Duplicate the text and paste next to the original
  8. Print several test copies to be sure the front and back images are lined up correctly
