Framed Scrapbook Clock 2 - Famiglia

After doing the first framed clock and having to add material to the back so that the clockworks wouldn't push the clock away from the wall, I shopped around and found this 11 x 14 shadowbox at A. C. Moore. Since this was 2 1/2" deep, I know I would have enough room.

    Scrapbook Page:
  1. Cut a piece of corrugated cardboard a little smaller than 11" x 14" to act as a backing to the page.
  2. Attach a 3/4" strip of beige background paper to the top and a 5 1/2" of the same paper to the bottom of the layout (I purposely chose a design that didn't require a full 14" piece of paper so I didn't have to piece it together)
  3. Attach an 8" piece of brown decorative paper, just barely overlapping the top strip
  4. Matt 8 3/4" x 6 3/4" striped paper to black cardstock and attach with foam tape in center of brown paper
  5. Change photo to sepia, add black border (or matt with black cardstock) and print on glossy photo paper. Attach with foam tape
  6. Attach 1" strip of striped paper to bottom of brown paper
  7. Use rub-on or rubber stamps to add floral flourish across all the pieces
  8. Use rub-on or stamp to print "Famiglia" at the top right of layout
  9. Insert brads through 4 silk flowers, inking each with tea dye distress ink; glue to layout, covering some of the flowers
  10. Attach large silk flower to center bottom of photo, covering one of the flower designs
  11. Use rub-ons to print the 12-3-6-9 of the clock face (make sure you've measured first to be sure your clock hands don't hit the sides or bottom of the frame).
  12. Punch a 1/2" hole in the center of the clock area, and widen as necessary

    Inserting the Clock:
  1. Insert shaft of clock through the page, and attach the hands (this is a good time to put a battery in the clock and make sure it works!)
  2. Use foam tape or other method to secure the clock works box to the back of the cardboard so it won't move when you set the time

Cutting the Hole for the Clockworks:
This 11" x 14" finished frame has the glass glued in, and a thin lip at the back just thick enough for the back piece (a masonite material-nice and heavy) to rest. You need to cut a rectangle through the backing material so that the clockworks is visible from the back (so that the battery can be changed)

  1. I cut a cardstock rectangle the size of the clockworks and attached to the clockworks with a small piece of tape
  2. Attach several pieces of double sided tape to the other side of the cardstock rectangle
  3. Line up your scrapbook page with the masonite backing of the frame, and use your fingers to pull the rectangle off the clockworks and onto the backing. You now have the correct placement for the hole you need to cut
  4. I drilled a hole in the 4 corners of the rectangle and used a hacksaw blade in a handle to cut the edges
  5. Since my edges weren't very straight or smooth, I attached masking tape to the edges for a more finished look

    Assembling
You now need to attach the scrapbook page to the masonite backing, but you don't want the clockworks to extend beyond the backing (or it will push the finished clock away from the wall)

  1. Cut spacers the thickness of the clockworks (these can be styrofoam, wood, etc.) and glue to the back of the scrapbook page (support at the 4 corners and the center is good)
  2. Add glue to the back of the spacers and attach to the masonite backing
  3. Place the "sandwiched" piece into the frame and fold down the little tabs on the frame to hold everything together.
Note: The scrapbook page has to bypass the lip in the back of the frame that's designed to catch the masonite backing; that's why you make your original page a little smaller than 11" x 14." Before attaching everything, you want to be sure that your page will bypass the lip.

Credits: Template #107 (includes swirl) (Jaana Saker); Beige Background Paper (Sande Krieger); Brown Decorative Paper-Harvest Spice (Shabby Princess); Striped Paper (Shabby Princess); Font (Scriptina) Techniques: This was created digitally, starting with the Template that I rearranged a bit. I added the papers, photo, text, and the numbers for the clock face. I then printed the papers individually and layered them, lining up the text and swirls.
