PSP Special Effects-Patterns

I was playing around with some Paint Shop Pro Special Effects, and came up with some interesting backgrounds. I thought it would be fun to go over some of them, especially since some of the images I came up with were a little strange looking (okay, in one case, really UGLY!), and I was surprised how nice the finished paper turned out.

Below are the original striped paper by Janelle Paige, my kaleidoscope tile, and the filled paper. The tile is a little strange looking, but the finished paper is very pretty:

Image 1

Image 2
  1. Open striped paper and resize to 600 pixels square

  2. Click the Effects Menu>Reflection Effects>Kaleidoscope (Image 1) and choose the Default. Change the number of petals to 5 and OK

  3. Click the Effects Menu>Photo Effects>Seamless Tiling,(Image 2) choose the Default and apply. You now have the center image above.

  4. Open a new image, as large as you want your finished paper to be, choose this tile as a pattern, set the scale on 10% (you may have to adjust the scale depending on how large your blank image is), and fill the image.

Okay, let's do the ugly one next! Here is my original flower image, the tile, and the filled paper. Hard to image that image produced that tile, isn't it? The choices are endless, and changing one little setting can change the whole look of the paper.

Image 3
  1. Open the flower image

  2. Click the Effects Menu>Reflection Effects>Kaleidoscope and choose the settings to the left. (Image 3) (I actually chose the Randomize feature - looks like a pair of dice and is circled on the image to the right. I kept clicking until I saw an image that looked promising.)

  3. Click the Effects Menu>Photo Effects>Seamless Tiling, choose the Default and apply.

  4. Open a new image, as large as you want your finished paper to be, choose this tile as a pattern, set the scale on 10%.

Let's try a different effect. Following is my original striped paper, the diamond tile, and the filled paper.

  1. Open Striped Paper
  2. Click the Effects Menu>Reflection Effects>Pattern and choose the default settings. Lo and behold, you get a diamond pattern!
You can use the diamond pattern as is, or use it as a pattern at 25% to fill another paper. Just change the number of columns and rows in the Pattern dialog box for a completely different look.

This pattern effect works on images also.

  1. Open Dogwood Image
  2. Click the Effects Menu>Reflection Effects>Pattern at default, and change the Scale Factor to -30.
  3. Fill the image using a scale of 30%
  4. Sharpen the image several times.

Here are two cards made with above backgrounds

Blue Ship-Digital (N67S)

  1. Create a 525 pixel square blank image and fill with the dogwood pattern at 50%.
  2. Use the eyedropper to choose a complimentary dark color from the pattern for the foreground (I chose a slate blue), and a light color for the background (I choose a very light grey).
  3. Select a rectangle 265 pixels by 525 pixels and fill with the blue color.
  4. Choose a text brush and apply the text, using the background color.
  5. Repeat with a second image, 350 pixels square, and fill with the pattern at 30%.
  6. Rotate the image 90 degrees before applying the brush so that the pattern is on the left.
  7. Create a third image about 275 square, fill with the background color (light grey).
  8. Open the ship clip art (the ship was black), use the Magic Wand to select the black and fill with the forground (slate blue) color.
  9. Copy and paste image onto the light grey square.
  10. Print all three images.
  11. Matt both smaller squares onto black cardstock and attach to large square as shown (ship was attached with foam tape).
  12. Tie two lengths of twine in a knot and attach ends around the back of the large square.
  13. Attach piece to a 5 1/2" black folded card.
  14. Print text on a tiny tag and use twine to tie to card.

  1. Print a 3" x 4 1/4" piece of diamond paper (created according to the directions above), and the same size striped paper.
  2. Attach striped paper to a 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" white card
  3. Tear right edge of diamond paper and attach to card
  4. Print train stamp image, matt to dark red cardstock and staple ribbon to top
  5. Attach to card with black photo corners
  6. Glue "Memories" charm in bottom right corner.
