Striped Paper

First we'll create the stripes that we will use as a pattern:

  1. Open a New Image, 200 x 200, at 300 dpi.

  2. Use the Zoom tool to enlarge the image to 100% or higher (this is not necessary, but I find it helps me to work with a larger image)

  3. Choose the Rectangle Selection tool, and draw a rectangle, any size you want, starting in the top left corner (you will see the "marching ants" as an outline to the selection you made). (Image 1)

  4. Click your Fill Tool, choose your first color, and fill the selection. Do NOT deselect (Image 2)

  5. This step is optional, but I like to add a little texture to my paper. Click Effects, Texture Effects, Texture. I choose Beige Rough at the default settings, but you can experiment with them all! To see the available textures, click on the small black arrow to the right of the sample and all your textures will be displayed. Deselect (Ctl+D). (Image 3)

  6. Repeat steps 3-6, using a different width for your selection, and fill with another color. (Image 4)

  7. Repeat these same steps for as many colors as you want. I've used 5 in my sample. Notice that I've only filled a portion of my image.

  8. Choose your Selection Tool, and draw a rectangle around the stripes. Notice that I drew my selection starting a little down from the top and ending a little up from the bottom. This is in case I slipped when drawing my original rectangles and didn't start at the very top, or end at the very bottom.

  9. Copy and paste as a New Image. (CTL+C, CTL+V). Save this image - name it something descriptive.

Now we're ready to fill our image with the stripe pattern.
  1. Open a new image, 3 times the size of the finished piece you want at 300 dpi, transparent background.

  2. Open your stripe pattern.

  3. Click the small black circle to the left under your Foreground color. A small menu will appear, giving you a choice of gradient or pattern - click pattern. Click once in the sample pattern square, and the Material Properties box will open. Click the Pattern tab at the top right. Click the small black arrow to the right of the pattern sample, and samples of all your available patterns are shown. The first image will be your stripe pattern. Click it, and click OK. Your pattern will now show in the Foreground color box. (I set the scale for the pattern at 70%. See directions at the end of the article).

  4. Click your Fill Tool, and left click in your blank image and you now have striped background paper! You may want to use your Zoom tool to enlarge the image to 100% so you can see how your stripes will look.

Now for the variations and extra credit. I like to distress my paper slightly, just to give it a little character!

To get this look, you would:
  1. Set your foreground color to white or cream
  2. Add a layer
  3. Choose your Brush Tool, and pick a Grunge Brush (I used a set from PB)
  4. Lightly brush your image and you will see little streaks of white
  5. Choose Adjust Menu, Blur, Gaussian Blur and set at 8 (this softens the streaks)
  6. You can repeat if you want some additional distressing

To create the samples below, I set the scale on 50%, 25% and 150% respectively. (There are no larger versions of these images). Click here to see a card made with the striped paper.

Here are some other papers I did. Once I drew all the stripes in the first example, I added layers and drew some dotted lines on several of the lines, and added small flowers to the wider pink rectangle. The other two examples were used for Christmas cards. You can see the possibilities are endless! (There are no larger versions of these images).
